---------------------------
Saint Valentine's Day or Valentine's Day is a holiday on February 14. It is the traditional day on which lovers express their love for each other; sending Valentine's cards, donating to charity or gifting candy. It is very common to present flowers on Valentine's Day. The holiday is named after two men, both Christian martyrs among the numerous Early Christian martyrs named Valentine. The day became associated with romantic love in the circle of Geoffrey Chaucer in High Middle Ages, when the tradition of courtly love flourished.
The day is most closely associated with the mutual exchange of love notes in the form of "valentines." Modern Valentine symbols include the heart-shaped outline and the figure of the winged Cupid. Since the 19th century, handwritten notes have largely given way to mass-proced greeting cards.[1] The mid-nineteenth century Valentine's Day trade was a harbinger of further commercialized holidays in the United States to follow.[2] The U.S. Greeting Card Association estimates that approximately one billion valentines are sent each year worldwide, making the day the second largest card-sending holiday of the year behind Christmas. The association estimates that women purchase approximately 85 percent of all valentines.[3]
The reinvention of Saint Valentine's Day in the 1840s has been traced by Leigh Eric Schmidt.[10] In the United States, the first mass-proced valentines of embossed paper lace were proced and sold shortly after 1847 by Esther Howland (1828-1904) of Worcester, Massachusetts. Her father operated a large book and stationery store, and she took her inspiration from an English valentine she had received. Since 2001, the Greeting Card Association has been giving an annual "Esther Howland Award for a Greeting Card Visionary."
In the second half of the twentieth century, the practice of exchanging cards was extended to all manner of gifts in the United States, usually from a man to a woman. Such gifts typically include roses and chocolates. In the 1980s, the diamond instry began to promote Valentine's Day as an occasion for giving jewelry

There are varying opinions as to the origin of Valentines Day. Some experts state that it originated from St. Valentine, a Roman who was martyred for refusing to give up Christianity. He died on February 14, 269 A.D., the same day that had been devoted to love lotteries.
Legend also says that St. Valentine left a farewell note for the jailers daughter, who had become his friend, and signed it "From Your Valentine".
Other aspects of the story say that Saint Valentine served as a priest at the temple ring the reign of Emperor Claudius. Claudius then had Valentine jailed for defying him. In 496 A.D. Pope Gelasius set aside February 14 to honour St. Valentine.
Graally, February 14 became the date for exchanging love messages and St. Valentine became the patron saint of lovers. The date was marked by sending poems and simple gifts such as flowers. There was often a social gathering or a ball.
In the United States, Miss Esther Howland is given credit for sending the first valentine cards. Commercial valentines were introced in the 1800s and now the date is very commercialised.
The town of Loveland, Colorado, does a large post office business around February 14. The spirit of good continues as valentines are sent out with sentimental verses and children exchange valentine cards at school.

為什麼它的英文是「Valentine』s Day」而不此顫是「Lovers』 Day」?
In ancient Rome, the Emperor Claudius II found it hard to get soldiers and felt the reason was men did not wish to leave their wives and families. As a result Claudius cancelled all marriages and engagements in Rome.
A romantic at heart priest, Valentine, defied Claudius's unjustified order. He secretly married couples. When his defiance was discovered, Valentine was imprisoned.
During Saint Valentine』s imprisonment, he healed the daughter of his jailer, Asterius. After that, he fell in love with her. Before his death Valentine wrote a farewell letter to his sweetheart from the jail and signed 『From your Valentine'. The expression became quite popular amongst love struck and is still very much in vogue.
Finally, Valentine was killed on February 14, about 270 AD. That』s the day, the Saint Valentine』s Day.

Christmas
Christmas, also known as Christmas, is translated as "Christ Mass", which originated from the Lunar New Year celebration in ancient Rome and has nothing to do with Christianity.
After the popularity of Christianity in the Roman Empire, the Holy See drifted this folk festival into the Christian system to celebrate the birth of Jesus.
But it is not Jesus'birthday on Christmas Day, because the Bible does not record when Jesus was born, nor does it mention such a festival, which is the result of Christianity's absorption of ancient Roman mythology.
All Saints' Day
Halloween, also known as All Saints'Day, is a traditional Western Festival on November 1, and October 31, the eve of Halloween, is the most lively time of the festival. Halloween Eve is often translated into Halloween in Chinese.
Easter Day
Easter is an important festival in the West. It falls on the first Sunday after the full moon in the spring equinox every year.
Christians believe that Easter symbolizes rebirth and hope in commemoration of the resurrection of Jesus Christ on the third day after he was crucified between 30 and 33 A.D.
4、情人節Valentine『s Day
Valentine's Day, also known as St. Valentine's Day or St. Valentine's Day, dates on February 14 of the Gregorian calendar, is one of the traditional festivals in Western countries, which originated from Christianity.
Now it has become a famous romantic festival all over the world, but people in different countries express their love in different ways.
April Fool's Day
April Fool's Day is also called All Fools'Day, Humor's Day and April Fool's Day. The Festival is on April 1 of the Gregorian calendar. It is a popular folk festival in the West since the 19th century. It has not been recognized as a statutory Festival by any country.
On this day, people cheat and play tricks on each other in various ways, often at the end of the joke to expose and declare the target of the joke as "fool".
