I read the Chinese version of 「Camille」 a few years ago. At that time I was deeply moved by the main character Marguerite Gautier. 「Camille」 or 「The Lady of the Camellias」 by Alexandre Dumas, fils, is the story of Marguerite Gautier, a young courtesan, or kept woman, in Paris in the mid 1800's, and how she falls in love with a young man, Armand Duval, and then tries to escape from her questionable past. Unfortunately, it comes back to haunt her and she ends up returning to that life and dies painfully and alone, but with the knowledge that she was a noble woman at heart. When I first began to read the book, I did not care for Marguerite or her attitude or lifestyle, but as I got further into the narrative, I realized that her saucy attitude was a front to cover the lonely woman that she really was. She felt used, abused and unloved, until the gentle Armand Duval came into her life and showed her that he loved her as a person and not for what she could do for him. It must have taken great courage for Marguerite to leave the life she had lived for so long, knowing all along that it was probably too good to be true and would not last indefinitely. And it also showed that Marguerite really loved Armand Duval for she could even change herself for him.
However, happiness didn』t last for long. When M. Duval, Armand's father, came to her, pleading for her to leave Armand to save both Armand's reputation and that of his younger innocent sister, Marguerite saw a way to become pure of heart, if not in body. She felt that it was her ty, because she loved Armand so much, to do this even though it meant giving up her own happiness and hurting Armand temporarily. She reluctantly returned to her former life, knowing that some day Armand would forgive her. Sadly, she died in debt and basically alone, except for her one female friend, Julie Duprat, who helped her ring her illness. She had her journal sent to Armand after her death, explaining why she had made the choices she had. I think Dumas's last few lines about Marguerite being the exception, not the rule were quite true, and I also agreed with his view that while her lifestyle could not be condoned, we as a society assume that all of these type of women are cold and heartless, while this may not always be the case. A person can make the wrong choices in life when they are young, and try to redeem themselves, but sometimes past situations prevent them from changing their lives, even though they desperately wish to do so. This applies to both men and women in many different types of circumstances: involvement in crime; drug or alcohol abuse; gambling; prostitution; financial problems; poor marriage choices; etc. And this is the fact, which exists in the whole society.
As far as the other characters in the book, I think Marguerite was right in saying that no one truly cared about her, but only wanted something from her, the only exceptions being Armand and Julie Duprat. Of course, the Comte de G. and Comte de N. wanted her body and appearance. The Duke needed to 「wake up and smell the coffee」 and realize that she could never replace his dead daughter. If he truly cared, he could have helped her leave her lifestyle without 「keeping」 her himself. And lastly, Prudence was a blood-sucking leech who used Marguerite almost worse than the men. I also think she was jealous of the fact that Marguerite had so much more courage than herself and someone truly loved her.

小仲馬以一部《茶花女》將109世紀的巴黎名妓瑪格麗特永恆的擱在了世界文學的長廊中，茶花女是風月場上一度走紅的人物，是深陷泥淖而靈魂高潔，表面驕奢淫逸而內心痛苦，渴望回歸「正常人」的軌道，最終都在命運捉弄下落了個凄慘結局，在表面華貴而實際一文不名中瘁於肺癆。
一、悲劇性
從古至今，都有悲劇性的因素，都有悲劇的存在。在人生的道路上，每個人都會經歷各種各樣悲慘的遭遇，他們會以各種各樣的方式來訴說悲劇性的命運。悲劇就是主人公由於堅持正義或積極進取，而與現實環境之間發生的沖突，沖突中主人公因感性生命遭到摧殘和毀滅而成就了精神生命的永恆價值，從而激起悲壯之情而使人們的心靈得以凈化，精神得以提升。悲劇最能表現矛盾斗爭的內在生命運動，從有限的個人窺見那無限的光輝的宇宙蒼穹，以個人渺小之力體現出人類的無堅不摧的偉大。
《茶花女》真實生動的描寫了一位外表與內心都像白茶花那樣純潔美麗的少女被摧殘至死的故事。主人公瑪格麗特是個農村姑娘，長得非常漂亮。她來到巴黎謀生，不幸做了妓女。富家青年真誠的愛她，引起她對愛情生活的嚮往。但是阿爾芒的父親反對這門婚事，迫使她離開了阿爾芒，阿爾芒不明真相，尋機羞辱她，終於使她在貧病交加之中含恨而死。作品中洋溢著濃烈的抒情色彩和悲劇氣氛，有感人至深的藝術魅力。
茶花女是一個純潔美麗的女人，同時也是一個墮落的不幸的女人，她靠賣笑度生，受人供養，在輕浮、放盪間縱容。當遇到真愛時，為了她所鍾愛的人，她寧可犧牲自己成全愛人及家庭。
二、悲劇命運的產生
茶花女從妓女生涯走向死亡上具有共同的悲劇命運。她的命運之所以以悲劇結束，是因為她的不幸和死亡表現了一定的社會矛盾，體現了一種必然性，她們的人性要求在當時的社會條件下實際上是不可能實現的。她的悲劇既是社會悲劇也是性格悲劇。
1、社會悲劇
荒淫腐敗的資本主義社會
茶花女瑪格麗特所處的法國正是七月王朝統治時期。這是法國資本主義由上升轉向沒落的時期，占據統治地位的金融資產階級，通過一切卑鄙無恥的手段和途徑，榨取社會財富，過著花天酒地、紙醉金迷的享樂生活，而人民卻不得溫飽，黃金的銅臭味伴隨著資產階級腐化淫亂的生活方式，充斥著整個社會，敗壞了整個社會。這時候的法國已經取消了封建的人身依附關系，憲法明文規定人人享有平等自由的天賦人權。因此，法國盡管同樣存在上等人、下等人的等級觀念，對於處於社會底層的妓女同樣輕視，但從形式上看，妓女的人身還是自由的。在發達的資本主義社會，是用虛偽的道德以及失業、飢餓來使她「自願」接受貴族資產階級的玩弄和蹂躪。
所以瑪格麗特淪落為妓女以致死亡，完全是資本主義私有制所造成的。她原是—個「純潔無瑕」的農村姑娘，但是，家庭的貧困，迫使她來到浮華的都會巴黎，靠著自己的美貌和青春，賣笑求生，成為資產階級上流社會的玩物。所以，瑪格麗特對於自己的處境，深有感觸地說：「我們這種人，一天換不到情人們的歡笑，一天討不住他們的虛榮，他們就拋棄了我們。」「我們再不是我們自己的了，我們再也不是活生物，只是些死東西罷了。」表面上看來過著錦衣美食的豪華生活，實際上卻像野狗似地乞討為生，強顏歡笑地過著毫無保障的日子。干百萬出身下層，本性善良的婦女，被迫賣淫為生,正清楚地說明了資本主義社會里剝削壓迫之深重，而資產階級公子哥兒們對於她的踐踏，又恰恰表明了資產階級的荒淫無恥和道德敗壞。
2、性格悲劇
在對女主人公悲劇原因的探究中，許多人往往將批判的矛頭直指向等級制度。毋庸置疑，以阿爾芒之父迪瓦爾為代表的傳統偏見的確是釀成女主人公悲劇命運的重要原因，然而，在對這個問題的探究中，我們不應忽略這樣一個事實，那就是——盡管茶花女的愛情都遭遇了來自外在的､社會的､他人的阻力，但這些並沒有成為導致她死亡這1悲劇結局的最直接因素。換言之，外在的一切並沒有直接將她置於死地，究其實，應該說是她自己主動放棄了生存的機會並最終選擇了死亡，這悲劇性的人生結局事實上是她們經過理性思考之後的一種自主性選擇。這種自主性選擇取決於她的性格因素。性格決定命運，如果說社會環境是導致悲劇命運的外在因素，那麼性格則是內在因素，性格是導致她悲慘命運的根本原因。下面主要從兩個方面揭示性格造成悲劇。
（1）.人生態度
茶花女在放盪之中有忠貞，任性之中有善良。日日夜夜的奢華淫盪生活，使她的精神極度疲勞、煩悶和空虛。生活里到處是虛情假意，冷酷自私，使她感情容易沖動，反復無常，狂熱任性。她狂歡縱樂，沒有積蓄，過著今朝有酒今朝醉的生活。她玩世不恭，游戲人生，「她的談笑粗魯得就像一個腳夫，別人講的話越下流，她就笑得越起勁」。作者滿懷同情的說， 「可憐的姑娘在放盪、酗酒和失眠中逃避生活的現實」，這是「比痛苦還更痛苦、還更悲愁的1種歡欣」。即使當茶花女遇見了阿爾芒，同意成為阿爾芒的情人後，為了應付每年10萬法郎的巨額花費，她仍然不得不強裝歡笑接待其他情人。
（2）.反抗精神
茶花女忍辱負重的犧牲精神有餘，堅決反抗的斗爭精神不足。她能擺脫公爵、伯爵和紈絝子弟的控制和威脅，堅決賣去一切奢侈品而和阿爾芒隱居鄉下，這是她反抗精神的表現。但是茶花女心腸太軟，過於舍己為人，對於門第等級觀念又太忍讓屈從，以至在跳出火坑之後重又折回，最後，用慢性自殺的方式含恨而死。這種懦弱性格只能引人憐憫，令人悲嘆。
茶花女是被侮辱受損害的善良女性，想跳出火坑，卻終於沒有能夠逃脫毀滅的命運。這說明在資本主義的法國，下層婦女都有同樣悲慘的命運。
三、悲劇命運的深思
茶花女生活在骯臟的環境中，遭受到同樣非人的待遇。可是她始終保持著「只有香如故」的心靈和美好的人生理想。在她被玩弄的軀體里，始終深藏著「不教泥淖陷渠溝」的靈魂。茶花女雖出身卑賤，但卻能堅決地拒絕「用不著對她講禮貌」的諸多男人的糾纏，顯示了她高尚的自尊。死，成了她最後的自尊。
茶花女純朴善良的風塵女子都對愛情專一執著。茶花女與阿爾芒，也確曾有過一段暫的「情切切良宵花解語，意綿綿靜日玉生香」的浪漫生活。然而，她所鍾愛的男子誤解了她。問世間情為何物，直教人生死相許。她因情而生、因情而死。茶花女死於怨，怨的是「風刀霜劍嚴相逼」的惡勢力。
茶花女最終都選擇為愛情犧牲自己，她在遭心上人誤解後痛不欲生抑鬱而終，表現了她情柔似水的品性。阿爾芒是不是後悔了呢？他悔「除了他的侮辱是他始終愛她的證據外他還給她什麼？」
所謂自古紅顏多薄命，或許因為她的靈魂太高潔的緣故，她不能也不願與渾濁勢力同流合污。因此，茶花女最終都以她年輕美麗的生命為代價，維護了自己的尊嚴。
茶花女是世界文學畫廊中經典的女性形象，她有骯臟職業與美好心靈，下賤身份與聰明才智，屈辱地位與堅強人格，執著的美好追求與勇決的自我毀滅，形成1系列的巨大反差，震撼人心地控訴了罪惡社會，留給人們無盡的遺憾和惆悵。
結語：茶花女的悲慘命運的源頭是她本性善良，不向命運低頭，還有對愛情的美好追求。她的悲劇也揭示了社會的腐敗和黑暗，她的命運值得同情，更值得我們認真的思索，她被逼上絕路，是社會的罪過，她的死更是對黑暗社會的一個反抗。她在社會面前是弱小的，自身的思想也有脆弱的1面，難以逃出世俗觀念的羈絆，但是，無論是失身時很少設防人之心，還是傳統觀念對她的束縛，都不能否定她優良的本性，這就決定了她的悲劇是美麗的，悲劇更呈現了她的鮮艷無比，這種美更襯托出社會和世俗的黑暗與邪惡，她對愛情的追求，對真摯誠懇的嚮往，對自身人格解放的渴求，以及為謀求個性解放而敢於犧牲的精神激勵了一代又一代的有識女性，更為後來的女性解放運動提供了極大的精神鼓舞。
